Gear progression in Diablo 4 gets much easier once you understand the difference between an item's normal affixes and its Legendary Aspect. The affixes sit at the top of the item window and cover familiar bonuses such as Dexterity, Energy regeneration, Poison Resistance, or extra Evade Charges. The gold text underneath is where the build-changing effect lives. When you're comparing D4 items, don't judge them by the affixes alone. A well-rolled Aspect can matter more than several ordinary stat increases.

Why the Roll Matters

Legendary Aspects don't always appear at the same strength. They roll within a range, and that difference can be noticeable during real gameplay. Sickfoot's Aspect is a good example for damage-over-time builds. It grants Movement Speed and Damage over Time Speed for each nearby enemy affected by your damage-over-time effects, with the bonus stacking up to 25 times. A roll of 1.0 percent per stack is useful, but a 1.5 percent roll reaches the cap with a much stronger payoff. In a crowded fight, that extra percentage adds up quickly and helps the build feel far more responsive.

Build Your Codex Carefully

You don't need to keep wearing the item that carries your best Aspect. Take the Legendary to a Blacksmith and salvage it. The item will be destroyed, but its Aspect will be added to your Codex of Power. The Codex keeps the strongest version you've salvaged for that particular Aspect, so finding a better roll later upgrades your stored option. That makes salvaging more useful than filling every stash tab with gear you might never equip.

Check the Aspect's percentage before salvaging.
Keep a perfect or near-perfect roll until you're sure it's recorded.
Compare the Aspect category with the slot you want to use.
Save rare materials for items you genuinely plan to wear.

Imprint the Right Item

When the Aspect is safely stored, visit the Occultist. You can imprint it onto a strong Rare item or replace the Aspect on another Legendary item. This is where smart planning pays off. Defensive, Offensive, Resource, Utility, and Mobility Aspects each have their own slot restrictions. Sickfoot's Aspect is a Mobility effect, so it generally belongs on Boots or an Amulet. Check the preview before confirming, because imprinting can change the item's upgrade path and may cost materials you aren't ready to spend.

Make Each Upgrade Count

A good routine is simple: inspect drops, identify valuable rolls, salvage the best duplicates, and imprint only after you've found gear with useful affixes. Don't rush to place a strong Aspect on an average item. Wait for a piece with the stats your build actually needs, especially if you're preparing for high-tier content. With a little patience, your Codex becomes a reliable library of upgrades, and resources from the best place to buy diablo 4 runes can help you finish the rest of your setup without wasting hard-earned materials.
